Subtilität ist eine Gabe, wissen Jimmy Vallance und Tom Howie. Zusammen formen die beiden Nordamerikaner aus dem kanadischen Vancouver den Leftfield-House-Act Bob Moses. Seit 2012 versteht sich das Duo dabei auf geschmeidige Tracks, Midtempi und Post-Club-Stimmungen. Statt Abfahrt und Drop zelebrieren Bob Moses subtiles Indie-Understatement zwischen Trentemøller und Coma.
Das Housegespann Frank & Tony verpasst den Highschoolfreunden den Bandnamen, nachdem Vallance und Howie nach dem separaten Umzug nach New York auf der Straße zufällig ineinanderlaufen. Vallance arbeitet zu jenem Zeitpunkt für eine Plattenmanufaktur. Howie widmet sich derweil dem Gesang und wechselt nach einem Jahr am Berklee College of Music in Boston nach New York.
Bei Bob Moses übernimmt nun Howie die sanften Stimmbeigaben zwischen Coolness und Ennui. Seine musikalischen Grunge- und Rockwurzeln fügen sich nach einigen Songwritingsessions immer besser in die elektronischen Entwürfe des Trance-erfahrenen Vallance. Das durchaus Pop-gängige Resultat dieser knapp einjährigen Proben legen die beiden schließlich Frank & Tony vor, die auch das Brooklyner Houselabel Scissor & Thread betreiben.
In der Folge erscheinen zwischen 2012 und 2014 insgesamt drei EPs. Insbesondere über Liveperformances erweitern Bob Moses den Kreis der Eingeweihten. Ob Coachella, Melt!, Sonar oder Lollapalooza - die Kanadier sind am Start und begeistern. 2014 und 2015 listet das einflussreiche Electronica-Magazin Resident Advisor den Act konsequenterweise unter den Top20-Livebands.
Für genügend Spannung und Erwartungshaltung ist also gesorgt, als im Frühherbst 2015 das Debütalbum "Days Gone By" via Domino Records (Hot Chip, Jon Hopkins, Caribou) erscheint. Von der Presse erntet Bob Moses' relaxter Songwriter-Deephouse viel Anerkennung. Howie führt den Mosesschen Ansatz en Detail aus: "Für uns gibt es einen Unterschied zwischen einem großartigen Track und einem großartigen Song."
"Ein großartiger Track kann instrumental oder dubby sein – ein brillantes Stück Produktionszauberei. Doch ein Song kann schon großartig sein, wenn nur jemand singt und Gitarre spielt – selbst wenn alles dilettantisch aufgenommen ist. Die Vibes lassen sich nicht manipulieren oder vorgaukeln. Das sind zwei verschiedene Herangehensweisen an Musik, und keine ist besser als die andere."
