Wer das Radio an macht, kommt früher oder später an Dire Straits-Songs nicht vorbei. "Brothers In Arms", "Walk Of Life" oder "Money For Nothing" sind nur einige ihrer größten Hits, und wer die nicht kennt, hat den Großteil seiner musikalischen Sozialisation in einer Tonne erlebt.
1977 findet sich die Band in London. Mit von der Partie sind neben dem ausgebildeten Journalisten und Pädagogen Mark Knopfler, dessen Bruder David an der zweiten Gitarre, John Illskey (Bass) und der Studiomusiker Pick Withers. 1978 erscheint ihr selbstbetiteltes Debut und mit "Sultans Of Swing" auch schon einer ihrer Klassiker. Der Song selbst ist eine Hommage an eine Jazzcombo aus einem Suburb von London und bringt die Quintessenz von Dire Straits ziemlich trocken auf den Punkt. Im Vordergrund streht die Liebe zur Musik und die klingt im Dire Straits-Kosmos mal bluesig, mit einer Prise Country, aber immer unterlegt mit Knopflers charakteristisch tiefem Gemurmel. In seinen Texten greift der Mann mit dem langen Daumennagel, mit dem er die Saiten seiner Stratocaster zum Singen bringt, gerne Situationen aus dem Alltag auf, oder verarbeitet Gesprächsfetzen, die er im Vorbeigehen aufgeschnappt hat. Der Spiegel umschrieb die Musik der Dire Straits einmal wie folgt: " ... sie rockt nicht, sie rollt." Und das sehr erfolgreich.
Knopfler, der unbestrittene Maestro der Band, ist ein Umtriebiger. Er schreibt oder produziert immer mal wieder für andere Künstler(so komponierte er Tina Turners Comeback-Hit "Private Dancer"), und ist auch als Filmmusikkomponist aktiv (Local Hero, Cal, Comfort And Joy). Das ist auch einer der Hauptgründe, warum es im Laufe der Jahre immer stiller um die Band wird. Knopfler tanzt einfach auf zu vielen Hochzeiten, als dass er es in einem festgefügten Bandkontext lange aushalten würde. Mit alten Freunden gründet er 1990 die Band Notting Hillbillies, aber das war auch nur eine Station in seinem Musikerleben.
Mit der letzten Dire Straits-Scheibe scheint der Saitenzupfer das Interesse an den Dire Straits verloren zu haben. Das, was einst frisch und gut arrangiert klang, verkam mit "On Every Street" zur spröden Selbstkopie. Die nachgeschobene Live-Platte konnte diesen Eindruck nicht revidieren.
Mittlerweile veröffentlicht Knopfler lieber solo (zuletzt: Sailing To Philadelphia) und lässt die Dire Straits ruhen. Ob sie jemals reanimiert werden, muss bezweifelt werden.
